No more math at the pub: how to split the bill fairly even without a calculator

Six people, one bill, four extra beers, someone didn't have dessert. How to split it so no one goes home angry?

Classic scene

The end of a good dinner. The waiter brings one bill. Someone had three beers, someone just water. Someone dessert, someone not. Someone pays by card, someone with cash. And with a calculator on your phone, you try to divide "so you owe me 247 and you 312...".

Familiar? It doesn't have to be this way.

Three ways to do it fairly

1. Equally (the simplest) Did everyone have roughly the same? Divide the total amount by the number of people and you're done. This works great when the company is used to "sometimes I have more, sometimes less, it evens out."

2. Itemized division (the most accurate) When the differences are large – someone only had coffee, someone a three-course meal – it's worth splitting the bill according to who had what. In Pucheeto, you can create a record of "shared expenses" and assign each item to specific people.

3. Taking turns (for regular parties) Do you meet regularly? Introduce a system of "one pays today, the other next time". Pucheeto has a separate record type for this – "My turn next". No petty counting, just fair turns over time.

What about a tip?

Agree beforehand. Either include it in the total amount before dividing, or let everyone add their own. Most importantly, the person who paid by card shouldn't have to guess.

Bonus: a rule that always works

"If you don't know how to split the bill fairly, give a little extra. The reputation of a generous person is cheaper than the reputation of a miser."

And if you want to remember it for next year? Write it down. 😉
